Dr Andrew Papworth
Postdoctoral Researcher, Vulnerability & Policing Futures Research Centre
University of York
After completing a BA (Hons) in Geography from Durham University, Andrew worked in several public-health and policing-related roles, principally in the charitable and public sector. He was awarded an MSc in Health Sciences from the University of York in 2013 and a PhD in Geography from University College London (UCL) in 2018.
Andrew first joined the Vulnerability and Policing Futures Research Centre in 2024. He now works part time for the Centre and part time on a project investigating interactions between people who use drugs and the police, which is funded by an Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) New Investigator Grant.
Within the Centre, he is currently working on a project focused on modern slavery, which aims to explore how preventative approaches could reduce demand on police services. He has previously worked on a Centre-funded project investigating mental health and routine police work, which aimed to illustrate the techniques, models and intervention methods used by the police when responding to people with mental health vulnerabilities.
Andrew’s past research has focused on different vulnerable populations, including people who use drugs, people living with dementia, and indigenous people. His research and impact activities have been funded by the ESRC, the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR), the Royal Geographic Society (RGS-IBG), the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), and Research England.
